it's been a long time since i updated... i guess this was more important to me when i was in england, a connection with my friends at valpo.  now that i'm back and can see them all the time, this has gone a little down on my priority list.  if i was in england right now, i'd probably be leaving for some country in europe, maybe italy or germany or norway.  at the least i would be hearing people talk in british accents and saying things like "cheers," "too right," "you wanker," "that's rubbish," "me mum," "a bloke," and "i'm knackered."  instead, i'm here at valpo and have classes tomorrow and homework this weekend.  maybe i should wish that i was in england again and traveling, but i'm pretty happy that i'm here right now.

i was just listening to the song "shifting sand" by caedmon's call with the lyrics "my faith is like shifting sand" and it made me think about how much i missed having friends who i could talk to about faith and who encourage each other.  that has definitely been awesome so far this semester.

tomorrow i'm going to cook something... and it's going to be awesome.  i never thought i would want to learn how to cook, but i learned a lot from my mom over christmas.  maybe i decided to learn more about cooking because i was sick of only knowing how to make pasta.  all i knew how to cook in england was pasta and so i ate more pasta than anyone should ever be forced to eat.  i don't know how much i learned from my mom, but she's probably one of the best cooks ever in history, so i'm probably somewhere up there too... i guess i'll find out tomorrow!

i just got back this morning from my friend's wedding in blue earth, minnesota... that was crazy.  i can't believe that matt's married.  at least his wife is really cool.  it was pretty fun to be there and see some old friends, and i think that it all went well for matt and sarah.  we got there on friday at about noon, cause we had to make sure our tuxes fit before the tux shop closed at 1.  i drove up with three friends who were in the wedding, too, so we had the whole afternoon to kill before the dress rehearsal, so we played some poker and i lost 10 dollars.  after the dress rehearsal and dinner, we played poker for a while with matt and the other ushers and groomsmen, and i lost another 7 dollars.  i'm not going to play poker again for a long time.  i think i might just give it up.  i used to be alright, but i think i've lost money about the last 10 times i've played.  at about 10 p.m. we went to a bar in blue earth to celebrate both the new year and matt's getting married.  after sleeping in on saturday, we pretty much just went to the church a few hours early for pictures and to get ready for the wedding.  the other ushers and i decorated matt's car before the wedding started (i hope matt and sarah were able to drive in that car...).  the wedding went really well, i think, but only lasted about 35 minutes.  afterwards we had to take more pictures, still in our tuxes (i wish those were never invented... you would think that for so much money they could at least be comfortable), and then go to the reception.  we got lost for about 45 minutes on the way to the reception, partly because the directions were horrible and partly because the visibility was about 10 feet.  the roads were very icy and it was raining and sleeting, so we couldn't really see the street signs or the lines on the street or much of anything, but eventually we made it there.  the dinner and toasts and everything went well, but then the dj decided to cancel at the last minute because of the roads.  luckily the place we were at had a pretty nice sound system, so we used cd's and one of sarah's uncles acted as the dj.  this morning we drove back and the roads weren't too bad, but we saw a couple accidents, so we had to drive pretty slowly.  that was a very long explanation of the wedding... i'll be impressed if anyone actually read through all of that.

something much more exciting is that i'm going back to valpo tomorrow.  well, i'm not looking forward to starting real classes again on wednesday and having classes on thursdays and fridays, but it'll be awesome to see people again.  now i need to go start packing.   happy late new year!

my older brother picked up his dog sully last night from his friends who had been taking care of him for the semester.  i love that dog.  sully weighs about 95 pounds, while our dog, maddie, weighs about 15 pounds at most.  sully needs constant attention and tries to play with maddie all the time, but unfortunately for sully, maddie is very scared of sully.  i would be scared of someone 6 times as big as me chasing me.  maddie has learned to use her size and usually hides under a couch or table that sully can't fit under.  sully gets very upset and starts whining really loudly.  he just wants to play with maddie, but i don't think he realizes how big he is.  he's probably the most good-natured dog i've ever known, but he also needs the most attention.  he hates to be alone.  i think he's perfected the pathetic sounding whine and look to get people to feel sorry for him and play with him.  i've been sitting here at the computer for 20 minutes, and he's come up the stairs and put his face on my arm three times.  i wonder if we can get a dog for our house next year?

it's good to be back home, but i think i'm still sort of on england time.  this morning i woke up at around 5:30 (11:30 a.m. england time) and couldn't get back to sleep.  after i went to the gym and got back a little bit later, my mom was cooking for the dinner tonight with my brother's girlfriend and her family.  although i'm already an experienced chef, especially after making pasta almost every day for the last month, i thought that my mom probably knows a little more about cooking than i do.  so, i've been helping her cook for the last hour or so... and i think i've realized that i don't ever want to become a chef.  but it would be nice to be able to cook something besides pasta once in a while.

this morning was the fourth time that i've driven since i got back to the u.s.  i drove the two and a half hours back from the airport in omaha with my mom, and i didn't crash the car or anything, and i drove yesterday twice, and that was fine.  this morning i guess i must have been thinking of england or something, cause when i pulled the car out of my driveway, i started to drive on the left hand side of the road.  luckily i realized what i was doing almost right away and switched back to the right side... i guess that's just how good of a driver i am.
